Chiado
O Chiado is located between the Baixa and the Bairro Alto. It is the bohemian neighborhood of Lisbon.
Besides the small shops and cafes, this neighborhood is linked to the intellectual life of the city, being the preferred meeting place for different authors, such as Fernando Pessoa, as well as for its museum or bookstores.
Trade Square
The trade square is undoubtedly the best known in Portugal. There are two points of special interest in this monumental square:
- Triumphal Arch of Augusta Street. It serves as a gateway to the Baixa, the most important street in the city. Its construction began 20 years after the earthquake of 1755 with the project of the architect Veríssimo José da Costa.
- The equestrian statue dedicated to King D. José I. It was built by the sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. It is the first equestrian statue in Portugal and the first sculptural monument in the public road dedicated to a living person.
